1. What is monitoring system?

Monitoring system is observing and measuring environmental factors such as groundwater level, wastewater amount, emissions, solid waste, etc… Each of the above environmental factors requires the measurement of different indicators and parameters to serve the research analysis and evaluation of environmental organization.

Effluent monitoring system consists of two main components, hardware and software:

  • Hardware includes machines and equipment for the sampling and measurement process, such as: Sensor for measuring water level and wastewater/ exhaust gas, Data-logger, data acquisition server…
  • Software is a data management and storage system of the object to be measured for a long time to serve researching, evaluating and monitoring process.

Thus, the environmental monitoring system plays an important role in helping people to monitor and assess the status of environmental factors such as groundwater level, wastewater amount, exhaust gas, solid waste… The purpose of this assessment is to provide timely warning to improve or develop climate change report. Thereby, it assists the authorities in controlling environmental problems.

2. Status of underground water exploitation in Vietnam

Exploiting groundwater extensively and illegally is taking place in many places, especially in big cities where the population is dense. Like many other developing countries in the world, Vietnam has been applying automatic groundwater monitoring systems in many places especially in big cities, helping environmental agencies can control overexploitation of groundwater.

In Ho Chi Minh City, according to statistics from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, there are more than 100,000 underground water wells with different diameters and depths that distributed unevenly. Exploiting and using groundwater extensively and excessively has caused subsidence, water pollution and increased risk of flooding in the city. More seriously, this causes decreasing groundwater and leading geological structure change.

Duc Hung Co is a contractor that has experiences in providing solutions and installing Automatic Groundwater Monitoring System in Ho Chi Minh City. Many units are required to install this system in order to transmit data directly to environmental agencies to manage, monitor and control the status of groundwater exploitation locality.

Concrete goal of automatic and continuous groundwater monitoring system include:

  • Providing assessments on the groundwater level development of each nation, serving reports about groundwater status
  • Providing assessments on the groundwater level development of each monitored area to serve the immediate requirements of state management agencies on groundwater protection.
  • Timely warning of unusual changes or risks of pollution and degradation of groundwater.
  • Building database on groundwater levels to serve the storage, provision and exchange information on national and international scale.

The parameters of water level and flow that are returned from underground water wells are clearly and specifically manifest through the data collection server system. Thereby helping environmental agencies control exploitation flow, meet Government regulations on management and using underground water resources effectively.
